In March 2022, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma performed Turandot, the considered masterpiece of Giacomo Puccini and his last and unfinished opera. Puccini suffered from a deadly illness and is believed to have died holding a leaf from the third act. His friend Arturo Toscani was in charge of finishing it. This work proposes a mixture between the musical intensity of arias and traditional Chinese songs. There could not have been a more energetic end for Giacomo Puccini. The exoticism of the historical background and the energy of the score make the entire work vibrate.
The production of the Opera di Roma highlights the creativity of the stage director Ai Weiwei. The Chinese artist knew how to capture and expand the original feelings of the work through new art and new scenic techniques. Ai Weiwei plays with projections simulating futuristic skyscrapers and classic pillars or columns.
