Salzburg represents Mozart and almost no work represents the Mozart family as much as their Zouberflöte (the Magic Flute). Director Lydia Steiner casts a grandfather as a narrator to read Die ZauberflÖte as a bedtime story to his grandchildren. In this way, the play’s rich fantasy breaks into the strict home of an upper-middle-class family, in which reverie has little place, and brings most of the three boys to the center of the action, immersing themselves in a world of fairy tales and dreams in whose surreal enlargements, the daily lives of children appear again and again. With a childish look, they accompany and guide the other protagonists through their destinations.
